Aurizon

Aurizon (formally QRNational) operate an intermodal service between Melbourne and Adelaide/Perth utilizing a stable of owned and hired locomotives.

Their trains are usually led by a member of their 6000 class and either one or two other units from the 6000 and LDP classes.

Great Southern Railway

GSR currently operate the only passenger services on this line, with the twice weekly daylight Overland between Melbourne and Adelaide. Pacific National provide the motive power to haul these trains usually in the form of a single NR class locomotive

Intermodal

Pacific National's Intermodal division operate container and steel trains on this corridor and between all mainland state capitals, excluding Darwin.

Haulage of the PacNat Intermodal services is domiated by the NR class.

Most trains feature two or three units, although occasionally quads or quins are sighted.

Rural & Bulk

Pacific National continue to operate 'as required' grain services loading at locations along the main line and the Hopetoun and Yaapeet branches.

This operator took over the hook and pull for the Iluka mineral sands trains between Hopetoun and Hamilton in late May 2013.

Specialized Container Transport

Specialized Container Transport operate trains between Melbourne, Adelaide and beyond to Perth, and are made up of their distinctive vans with some containers. SCT provide their own line haul with their fleet of modern SCT and the new CSR class locomotives for their Melbourne to Perth Services.

Mid 2012 saw SCT take over the haulage of container services from the Wimmera Intermodal Freight Terminal (WIFT) at Dooen for Wimmera Container Lines with an almost daily service hauled by a single CSR locomotive until this class was withdrawn from service at which time a single hired GL class locomotive took over the line haul of these trains.

QUBE Logistics

QUBE Logistics has not regularly operated west of Melbourne during the last year, but they retain the accreditation to haul grain from various country locations to the ports of Geelong and Appleton Dock.

Southern Shorthaul Railroad

Southern Shorthaul Railroad entered into the grain haulage task on the western Victorian standard gauge network in 2017 with trains loading at Dimboola, Nhill, Warracknabeal and Jeparit.

Genesee & Wyoming Australia

Genesee & Wyoming Australia operate what was formally the Australian Railroad Group's South Australian operation which was owned by a joint venture between Genesee & Wyoming International and Wesfarmers. On this line GWA operate the South Australian intra-state grain services on the main line as far as Wolseley. Trains no longer operate on the Loxton and Pinnaroo branches.

They also operate the occasional grain service from AWB GrainFlow at Dimboola or GrainCorp at Marmalake (Murtoa) to eithr Port Adelaide / Pelican Point in Adelaide or Geelong on behalf of Viterra / Glencore.

  • First Number - Day of the week (1 - Sunday.....7 - Saturday)
  • Second Number - Route Code -
    • Q - Coomandook to Wolseley Line
    • R - Tailem Bend
  • Third Number - Destination Code - Number of location along line
  • Train Sequence Number - 1 for first down train, 2 for first up train, 3 for second down train...

Australian Rail Track Corporation

The Australian Rail Track Corporation controls the track between Melburne and Adelaide and is responsible for all maintenance on the line. They do not operate their own trains but contract this to other operators.

Pacific National currently hold the contract to haul the six monthly visit by the 'AK Cars' train.
