Earthquake suspends ARTC trains

Trains across the ARTC network in Victoria were halted for a number of hours on Wednesday due to an earthquake in the state’s northeast.

A release from ARTC at around 1pm indicated that crews were inspecting the network between Parkes – Cootamundra – Melbourne – Wolseley following a 5.9 magnitude earthquake at Mansfield in Victoria’s northeast at about 9.15am.

The tremor was felt across Victoria and into South Australia, New South Wales, and the ACT.

Some trains were held in the rail corridor while ARTC teams inspected the network, including the many structures that sit within rail corridors.

An update from ARTC at around 6.20pm on Wednesday confirmed that the network was undamaged and again operational.
An extensive safety review of the ARTC rail corridors occurred today following an earthquake of approximately 6.0 in the vicinity of Mansfield in Victoria.

ARTC can now confirm all rail lines are open through Victoria, New South Wales and into South Australia.

We thank the community and our customers for their patience as we ensured the rail corridors were safe for operation.
