Aurizon operates a twice-weekly intermodal service between Melbourne and Perth, and the occasional grain service from GrainFlow at Dimboola or GrainCorp at Marmalake (Murtoa) to Port Adelaide / Pelican Point in Adelaide on behalf of Viterra / Glencore.

excluding Darwin.

Pacific National continue to operate 'as required' grain services loading at locations along the main line and the Hopetoun and Yaapeet branches.
This operator took over the hook and pull for the Iluka mineral sands trains between Hopetoun and Hamilton in late May 2013, but this traffic ceased in November 2017.

Specialized Container Transport operate trains between Melbourne, Adelaide and beyond to Perth, and are made up of their distinctive vans with some containers.
SCT provide their own line haul with their fleet of modern SCT and the new CSR class locomotives for their Melbourne to Perth Services.
Mid 2012 saw SCT take over the haulage of container services from the Wimmera Intermodal Freight Terminal (WIFT) at Dooen for Wimmera Container Lines with an almost daily service usualy hauled by double CSR locomotives, but the SCT and hired VL classes have also been reported.

Southern Shorthaul Railroad entered into the grain haulage task on the western Victorian standard gauge network in 2017 with trains loading at Dimboola, Nhill, Warracknabeal, Rainbow and Jeparit wince then.

The Australian Rail Track Corporation controls the track between Melburne and Adelaide and is responsible for all maintenance
on the line. They do not operate their own trains but contract this to other operators.
SSR currently hold the contract to haul the six monthly visit by the 'AK Cars' train, whcih has recently utilised a double streamliner combination.
